Diving the Devil's jacuzzi
The underwater hot springs in Kleifarvatn lake have only recently been discovered and the bubbling springs are just a 100 meter swim from the shore of the lake.
Only a 30-minute drive from Reykjavík, Kleifarvatn lake is nestled within an impressive volcanic terrain. One can experience complete silence in this stunning landscape. As there are only rugged tire tracks that lead to Kleifarvatn, we take our 4×4 dive bus equipped for this frontier diving adventure.
Your briefing will take place on the shores of Kleifarvatn. Depending on the direction of the wind, you might then already smell the nearby hot springs.
At the lake’s entry point, you can already see the white and yellow sulfur deposits on the lake floor and the gas emanating from below the lake’s floor.
In the center area of the hot springs is a wide caldera that releases large amounts of warm water and gases. When entering into this space, you may have the feeling of diving into a gentle earthquake because the air bubbles coming out of the ground create pressure that causes the rocks to vibrate. Divers can feel these vibrations deep into their bones if the activity is strong enough that day.
After the dive we will travel to Krýsuvík and Seltún, a nearby geothermal hot springs area. In Krýsuvík we will visit the boiling mud pots and the colorful sulfur deposits.
We will then make our way back to Reykjavík. We recommend that you bring your swimsuit with you as and we can drop you off at the Blue Lagoon or at one of Reykjavík’s local pools. Here you can relax in the hot tubs and end the day in traditional Icelandic fashion.

Frequently asked questions about our Geothermal Hot Spring Dive Tour
Can I bring my own dive equipment?
Yes of course! You are welcome to bring your own dive equipment to Iceland. Just make sure that your dive equipment is serviced and rated for cold water diving. As a standard we use DIN cylinders; please let us know in advance if you require a different set up for your dive equipment and we will do our best to satisfy your request.
Please note we do not offer any discount on the equipment that you might bring. Dive.is does not take any responsibility on any equipment you may bring on the tour.
Do you rent out underwater cameras?
Unfortunately we do not offer cameras for rent, we do however offer a very reasonably priced photo package including photos taken by your guide during your tour, and access to our "Best of Silfra" collection. You are however welcome to bring your own waterproof camera.
I forgot my certification card. Is there any way to look my certification up online?
If you are PADI or SSI certified we can often look you up online. We need you full name (incl. middle name) and your birth date, as it appears on your certification card, before the tour starts. Please be aware that both PADI and SSI sometimes have glitches in their website/data imput, which results in your records not being findable. If you are certified with any other organization, we are unfortunately unable to look you up. In either of these cases you will not be able to participate. It is therefor best to always carry your dive cards, or to sign up for PADI e-cards, which are stored on an App on your phone. If you have only recently certified, the temporary card that is emailed to you by your instructor is acceptable proof.
