Iceland has it all!
Experience the land of ice and fire
Silfra is a bucket list item for most if not all travellers that visit Iceland every day. And with good reason! Formed hundreds of years ago by the powerful earthquakes that shook this mysterious land, Silfra is a place like no other. This fissure between the Eurasian and the North American tectonic plates is filled with crystal clear water that flows underground from the nearby Langjökull glacier and is filtered through the lava rocks for years before reaching the surface. Once it does emerge, what we have is the clearest and purest water on Earth. So pure in fact, that we encourage our customers to take a sip during their tour!
Did you know that everyone can snorkel, you do not need certifications, only to know how to swim. All snorkelers get a warm undersuit and a drysuit so everyone is dry and warm during the snorkel trip. Age limit is 12 years old so bring your teens to Silfra with you.
This snorkeling tour with DIVE.IS was awarded 3rd place on the Best of the Best Traveler's choice award of 2023 by Tripadvisor as well as being in 5th place in 2022!
Your day will begin at the Silfra meeting point, where our amazing guides will welcome you and give you a detailed briefing of the adventure you are about to embark upon. They will give you a wealth of information about Silfra and its geological characteristics and they will be happy to answer all of your questions about this mesmerizing place. Then it will be time to gear up in the dry suit and make your way to the entry point (a metal staircase that makes it super easy to gradually step into the water).
During your snorkeling tour, which will last about 30 to 40 minutes, you will explore the four main parts of Silfra and you will observe the fascinating rock formations and colorful algae that populate the fissure. There is no life in Silfra, except for the occasional fish that gets there after losing its way from the Thingvallavatn lake.
You will go through the Big Crack, Silfra Hall and Silfra Cathedral. The last part of Silfra is called the Lagoon, because it's shallow and extremely clear. Here you will have some time to swim around and enjoy the unique environment. Your snorkeling tour ends when you get back to the parking lot, take the gear off and enjoy some hot chocolate and cookies with your guide.
After the snorkeling tour, it will be time for you to get back on the road and drive for about 30 minutes to Laugarvatn Fontana Spa. The Laugarvatn village has been a renowned bathing spot since viking times thanks to the nearby geothermal hot springs. Laugarvatn Fontana Spa offers a comprehensive experience of the geothermal heat thanks to the beautiful hot pots, saunas and steam rooms that they built right on top of the hot springs. Guests are invited to soak in the hot pots and the most adventurous can also take a dip in the cold lake. Going from hot to cold water and viceversa is a renowned wellness practice that benefits circulation and muscles.
Laugarvatn Fontana Spa also offers drinks and a delicious buffet open for lunch and for dinner, but that's not all! You can also sign up for the tour of their geothermal bakery, where you will see how Icelanders used to bake bread underground, taking advantage of the geothermal heat. If you would like to add lunch, dinner or the tour of the geothermal bakery to your group tour, please let us know in advance so that we can organize it for you (additional costs apply).
This tour is the perfect day for any group. We always take a maximum of 6 snorkelers into the water at a time, but for larger groups we can coordinate the groups of 6 so that everyone is done at approximately the same time. With the most experience in showing Silfra to our guests out of any tour operator in Iceland, we know how to make sure things go smoothly!
Silfra fissure is located at Thingvellir National Park which is on the Golden circle, a very popular sightseeing route in Iceland. Other sightseeing locations on the Golden circle are Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hot spring and Kerið crater.
