Why Snorkeling in Iceland Between Tectonic Plates Is So Unique

Silfra is the only place in the world where you can snorkel between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Located in Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Silfra Fissure is fed by meltwater from Langjökull Glacier. The water naturally filters through porous lava rock for decades, traveling nearly 50 kilometers (31 miles) before reaching Silfra. This process creates visibility that often exceeds 100 meters (328 feet), giving Silfra some of the clearest water on Earth.

Instead of colorful coral reefs, Silfra is defined by towering volcanic rock formations and crystal-clear glacial water. Exceptional visibility and its striking geological setting have made it one of the world's top dive sites. The geology makes Silfra remarkable, but it's only when you slip beneath the surface that you truly appreciate the experience.

The Experience Begins Before You Enter the Water

Your adventure begins at the Silfra parking lot, where you'll meet your certified DIVE.IS divemaster. Before entering the water, your guide will:

-Fit you with a dry suit and thermal undersuit
-Check your mask, snorkel, fins, hood, and gloves
-Explain the route and safety procedures
-Answer any last-minute questions

Most guests are experiencing snorkeling in Iceland between tectonic plates for the first time, and your guide makes sure you know exactly what to expect before entering the water.

As you walk toward Silfra, the crystal-clear water immediately catches your attention. The visibility is so remarkable that the fissure almost appears empty until you look more closely.

Your First Moments in the Water

The first thing you'll notice is the cool water on your face. Since your face remains exposed, you'll immediately feel the fresh glacial water, which stays between 2°C and 4°C (35–39°F) year-round. The sensation quickly fades, while the rest of your body stays warm and dry inside your professionally fitted dry suit.

Once everyone is ready, your guide leads the group into the gentle current. Instead of swimming continuously, you'll drift naturally through the Silfra Fissure. This gives you plenty of time to admire the scenery without feeling rushed.

Drifting Through Silfra's Four Sections

The journey through Silfra is divided into four distinct sections, each with its own scenery and atmosphere. As you drift with the current, you'll experience how the underwater landscape changes from one section to the next.

Silfra Big Crack
Your adventure begins in Silfra Big Crack. This is the narrowest part of the fissure and the closest you'll come to the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Towering volcanic rock walls surround you as you enter the fissure. In some places, the gap is only a few meters wide, making the geological setting feel even more dramatic. The crystal-clear water immediately showcases Silfra's famous visibility and sets the tone for the rest of the tour.

Silfra Hall
Leaving the Big Crack behind, the fissure opens into Silfra Hall. More sunlight reaches this wider section, creating brilliant shades of blue and turquoise. The slower pace gives you time to take in the lava formations around you.

Silfra Cathedral
Many visitors consider Silfra Cathedral the highlight of the tour. Its greater depth and open space make the exceptional visibility even more striking. Looking ahead, it can be difficult to tell where the water ends and the landscape begins. As sunlight filters through the water, the volcanic walls seem to glow, creating one of Silfra's most memorable views.

Silfra Lagoon
The journey ends in Silfra Lagoon, where the fissure opens into a wide, shallow basin. The current slows, giving you one last chance to take in the scenery before reaching the exit point. On calm days, the surrounding mountains reflect on the surface, creating beautiful views both above and below the water. It's a peaceful finish to an unforgettable experience.

What You'll See Beneath the Surface of Silfra

There's no coral or marine life to spot here. Instead, Silfra's beauty comes from the water's remarkable clarity and a volcanic landscape shaped over thousands of years.

Beneath the surface, you'll witness:

-Towering lava walls rising from the fissure
-Brilliant shades of blue and turquoise that shift with the light
-Exceptional visibility that makes the underwater landscape appear almost endless

One of Silfra's most distinctive features is Troll Hair, the long green Cladophora algae that grows on the volcanic rocks. It sways gently with the current, adding movement and a splash of color to the otherwise rugged underwater landscape. Against the crystal-clear water, it creates one of Silfra's most recognizable and photographed natural features.

One more fascinating detail: Silfra is constantly changing. As the tectonic plates drift apart by roughly 2 cm (0.8 in) each year, occasional earthquakes gradually reshape the fissure. While the changes are subtle, no two visits are ever exactly the same.

Why Many People Call It "Liquid Meditation"

Many divers and snorkelers describe Silfra as "liquid meditation." The nickname comes from the effortless drift, exceptional visibility, and quiet environment beneath the surface.

The gentle current carries you through the fissure, so there's very little swimming involved. Instead, you can simply float and take in the scenery. With visibility often exceeding 100 m (328 ft), the crystal-clear water creates a remarkable sense of openness and even weightlessness. The only sound is the steady rhythm of your breathing, making it easy to understand why the experience feels so calming.
