Diver observes the amazing hydrothermal chimneys

3-Day Strýtan Dive Tour

Dive some of the world's most unique dive sites

Silfra & Strýtan Hydrothermal Chimneys

Back by popular demand, our compact Strýtan dive tour offering Iceland´s most popular dive sites in only 3 days!

The 3-Day Strýtan Tour Includes:

  • The unique Strýtan hydrothermal chimneys and home to the ever charming wolf fish in the north
  • The lovely Nesgjá, Silfra´s counterpart in the northeast
  • A snorkel with trout in a geothermally heated river!
  • And last, but not least, the one and only Silfra lava fissure, the ‘dive between the continents’

We will start the tour by picking you up at your accommodation in the Reykjavik area and drive up North to the lovely Eyjafjörður fjord. On this drive you will see a nice variety of Iceland´s beautiful landscape. (NOTE: we can also pick you up in Akureyri, if you already find yourself up north and want to join this 3-Day tour.) On arrival the boat will be waiting for us to do 2 dives at both the big and small Strýtan hydrothermal chimneys.

A 55m tall pinnacle made up of petrified mineral deposits rising up from the bottom of Eyjafjörður fjord, the big Strytan chimney is surely something to behold! With the nearest bottom at 70m, this dive requires outstanding buoyancy control and reasonable physical fitness. As the only such hydrothermal chimney in the world accessible to recreational divers, this is site is of great interest to divers and scientists alike.

The little Strytan chimney may be smaller than its counterpart across the fjord, but it is no less interesting. If anything, many divers, given the option, will prefer re-visiting the smaller of the two chimneys. The reason for that is the abundance of exciting and varied marine life found around the 10m tall cone-shaped stack of pink algae covered rocks and mineral deposits. Ranging from the minuscule skeleton shrimp to the menacing, but ultimately quite friendly, wolf fish; nesting lumpsuckers, colourful scorpionfish, inquisitive cod – not to mention nudibranchs and crustaceans of all stripes – you won´t know where to look! Also, with the bottom at 20-25m, this site is the shallower and less challenging of the two.

On the second day we will drive to the beautiful Nesgjá lava fissure for an unforgettable fresh water dive in a secluded location. Often referred to as ´Silfra´s counterpart´, this crystal clear glacial melt water-filled crevasse is part of the same fault line as Silfra, separating the North-American continental shelf from the Eurasian one. After our dive we will snorkel in a geothermally heated river where good sized trout are often spotted up close, along with the mysterious ´dancing sands´. About half of our guests do this one in their swimming suits! We will also visit one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls Goðafoss (The Waterfall of the Gods) and the charming town of Húsavík.

On the last day we get up for the drive back South to the Thingvellir National Park where we will dive the magnificent, the incomparable, the one-and-only Silfra fissure. A dive in this spring fed wonder of nature is the most spectacular way you can imagine to round off your 3-Day dive adventure… and to rinse your dive gear!
